FAQs
All your questions answered...
Website:
What software will be used to build my website?
Your new website will be built using WordPress as the framework, and the pages will be built and styled using the Divi theme. WordPress plugins will be used as and when required.
Does my location matter?
Not at all, I have Clients UK wide.
How much will my new website cost?
The price will be agreed before any work starts. I quote a fixed price based on how long I estimate it will take me to build the site based on an agreed specification of the number of pages, and the content & functionality within each page.
My time estimate will be based on past experience. The price will be calculated at estimated no. of man hours x my hourly rate.
Every website is different, so for example, a 5 page site for Client "A" may take longer to build than a 5 page website for Client "B". It all depends on the content and functionality.
As a very broadpark guide, most websites I have built to date over the past 12 years, have come in at between £750+VAT and £1800+VAT. Some cheaper, some dearer. My minimum charge is £450+VAT.
When are the payment points?
There are 3 payment points. I take this approach to protect both you and me.
- The first 25% when I have completed building the site menu structure and the Home Page and you are happy with what I have produced to date.
- The second 25% when I have completed two thirds of the number of pages and you are happy with what has been produced to date.
- The remaining 50% when I have completed building the site and we both agree it is ready to put "live".
This approach protects me from time-wasters and limits your liability should unforeseen circimstances occur.
Will I be able to make simple changes to the website?
Absolutely yes! Because of the toolsets your website will have been built in, it will be easy for you to make simple changes with no need for any coding skills whatsoever.
I will provide you with login credentials to the backend of the site and show you how to do things such as adding/changing images & text, although as part of my hosting, I will carry out up to 3 minor changes or 1 major change to your site to keep it up to date, at no additional cost.
I would recommend, however, that I make major changes (such as building new pages or extra sections within existing pages) as a pay-as-you-go maintenance activity.
Please also note: I do not make any content changes without your instruction or consent, even if they seem like obvious ones, like out of date events, etc. Everythig is discussed with you first, always.
Can the website be extended as time goes by?
Yes. The website can be grow and extend over and above the initial build. This is particulaly useful as and when your business changes or grows.
What happens if something happens to Vikki Smith?
I have put business continuity and contingency plans in place that kick in should I become incapacitated. Access to your domain and website will passed over to another web designer with the appropriate skill sets.
They will contact you and give the option to stay with them or transfer access to your domain and website to another web designer of your choice.
Hosting:
How much will my hosting cost?
Generally my basic hosting is £30/month+VAT. It gets your website visible on the internet and comes with your SSL Certificate, Monthly Back-ups and Software updates, as well as including some small website changes to keep your site up-to-date, at no additional cost.
For more complex sites with ecommerce elements, the hosting fee will increase due to additional security and settings that will need to be in place and maintained.
What is an SSL Certificate and what does it mean?
If you've noticed that some websites have the prefix https: it means they hold an SSL Certificate and their site is secure and trusted.
SSL is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remain private.
Companies that request personal information from a user, such as an email address or payment information, should have SSL certificates on their website. Having one means that the details you are collecting are private and ensures the customer that when they see that padlock and "https://", their privacy is safe.
What else is covered with my hosting fee?
Software Updates : When we build a website we use various types of software that can quickly go out of date, get upgraded, change, etc. we make sure any software used in your website build is kept up to date with the latest versions so will keep your site more robust with the latest software settings.
Website Back-ups : This is so important to prevent loss of data:
- Reverse Issues During Updates. Updates on occasion, come with their own set of issues. As necessary as they are, an update can cause something to go wrong. Now this doesn’t mean you should avoid updates. Quite the contrary in fact, they simply need to be executed with due care. Ensuring your website is fully backed up prior to updates ensures you’re fully secure should something go wrong.
- Avoid Losing Important Data. The very thought of losing any data associated should fill you with instant dread! Of course, it’s not just human error that results in a loss of data. Our advice is to keep on top of backups to ensure everything that’s important to your business remains secure.
- Protect Against Potential Hackers. Whether we like it or not, hackers are out there. The consensus is often ‘it will never happen to me’, but in reality it’s ‘when’, not ‘if’. That said, providing you remain secure and employ the right safety aspects, you are doing everything you can to avoid this situation. By restoring a backup, credentials can be updated with normal service resuming.
Logo Design:
How much will my logo cost to design?
As with websites, the cost of a logo can vary depending on your business needs. Small startups usually budget between £150 and £1,000 for a professional, bespoke logo with full ownership rights.
How long does a logo design take?
The turnaround time for a logo from sales to completion is typically 2 weeks, which will be discussed before any payments are made. Timescales are also dependent on response time from yourself, and the number of additional changes to designs.
How many designs do I get?
Following my design process, you will be presented with some logo options based upon agreed objectives. Once final payment has been made, you will own the copyright to the final agreed design.
What if I don't like the first set of logos at all?
We design the logo based on details which we gained from answers provided at the start of the project. This will include information about the business, and will also cover any specific requirements you may have.
We will have considered your target audience, competition etc. As a piece of design work that’s functional, a logo should perform for your business. We will cooperate with you to ensure the design achieves all criteria agreed upon, which will include any specific requests made before starting the designs.
Whilst very unlikely to happen, if you still dislike the designs, you don’t need to make full payment. Before starting the project we take 50% payment, so if you don’t like the work done for you, you don’t need to pay the final amount.
What do I get at the end?
Once your logo design is completed I will supply your logo design in various formats to allow the use of the logo across various mediums. We will also provide a short guide to explain each format to get the best results. This is a summary of what we will provide:
- CMYK version – Printed material is made up of 4 colours; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK). This version will be ideal on any printed literature where full-colour photos are used. We will provide a CMYK version as a Vector (.svg and PDF) to give flexibility across professional design software and office based software such as Word or PowerPoint.
- RGB version – Unlike print colours, screen colours are made up of Red, Green and Blue, mixing the light of each colour to make up the full-colour spectrum. This will be provided as an RGB JPEG file format for web and screen use, as well as PNG where transparency is needed.
